Seam allowance decides everything
Seam allowance is the fabric folded inside a seam. Letting a garment out uses that fabric. If there’s plenty, it can be let out; if there’s almost none, it can’t be done without adding fabric.
How to check it yourself
Turn the garment inside out and look at the seams at the waist, center back and sides. Wide folded fabric means there may be room; a narrow, overlocked edge means there probably isn’t.
When there’s no allowance left
Sometimes a panel or gusset can add room, but it changes how the garment looks and isn’t always worth it. Your tailor will tell you honestly at the fitting, and anything not on the posted list is priced in your home before work.
Will it show?
Fabric that was inside a seam can be less faded than the outside, so a faint line may show where the old seam was. You’ll hear about it before you approve.
What letting out costs
A waist change is $40 on Long Island. Other changes are on the pricing page or quoted at the fitting. Nothing is charged until after delivery, and never more than the quote you signed.
