Original Hem vs Standard Hem on Jeans: Cost and When It's Worth It

An original hem keeps the factory-finished, faded edge of your jeans by moving it up. With 123Alterations it costs $36 on Long Island versus $28 for a standard hem. It suits washed or distressed denim; on dark or raw denim a standard hem often looks right.

Original hem: the factory edge, kept

The original hem is cut off, the leg is shortened, and the original edge is sewn back on. From the outside the jeans look like they came this length, with the same fade and stitching at the bottom.

Side by side

  • Original hem: keeps the worn-in look of washed denim. Costs more because it takes longer.
  • Standard hem: a clean new hem. A good fit for dark, raw or dress denim.

What each costs

Original hem: $36 on Long Island, $40 in NYC. Standard hem: $28 and $32. Full list on the jeans hemming price page.

Pick the right one in 10 seconds

Look at the bottom of your jeans. If the edge is faded or distressed and you like it, choose original hem. If it’s crisp and dark, a standard hem will usually match.

Pin for length the right way

Wear the shoes you’ll wear most with the jeans. If the jeans are new and not pre-shrunk, mention it at the fitting.

Want them slimmer?

Questions

Should I wash jeans before hemming?

If they are new and not pre-shrunk, washing first helps make sure the hem does not end up too short.

Can flared jeans keep an original hem?

Often not neatly, because the leg changes width. Your tailor will say at the fitting.

Hemming your pants shouldn’t take two subway rides.
