What you get in a standard hem

The posted hem price covers shortening plain-hemmed or blind-hemmed pants: your tailor pins the length at your home with your shoes on, the pants are hemmed in the workroom, checked against your signed quote, and returned.

Prices by pant type

  • Dress pants and chinos (plain or blind hem): $28 on Long Island, $32 in NYC.
  • Jeans with the original hem kept: $36 on Long Island, $40 in NYC.
  • Anything not on the list (for example cuffs or lined trousers) is priced by your tailor in your home before anything leaves. You see every line and approve it.

What makes a hem cost more

Work that isn’t a plain hem, like keeping a factory-finished jeans edge, takes more time and is priced separately. Rush work (back in under 5 days) adds 40% to the rushed items.

Original hem vs standard hem

An original hem moves the factory edge up so faded or distressed jeans keep their look. Read the original hem guide.

How fast you get them back

Promised turnaround is 7–10 days, or under 5 days with rush. You choose the return window.

Pinned at home, with your shoes on

The hem length depends on the shoes you wear, so have them on (or at least ready) at the fitting. Your tailor pins each pair, and the quote you sign sets the most we can charge.

Paying for it

Nothing is charged at booking. Your card is charged once, after delivery, for the approved amount. Orders below the minimum order include a trip fee; see the pricing page. New York excludes alterations to clothing from sales tax. Book your fitting.

Questions

Should I wear my shoes for the fitting?

Yes. Have the shoes you will wear with the pants ready, because the hem is pinned to them.

Can a hem be let down?

Often, if there is enough fabric folded inside. Your tailor checks the hem allowance at the fitting.

Do I pay before or after?

After. Your card is saved at booking and charged once, after delivery, for no more than the quote you signed.

Is there sales tax on alterations in NY?

No. New York excludes tailoring and alterations to clothing from sales tax.
